The School of Foreign Languages of Ludong University was founded as the English Faculty in 1963, renamed English Department in 1971, Department of Foreign Languages in 1994 and attained the present name in March 2002.
The school presently has seven departments: English Department, Business English Department, Japanese Department, Korean Department, French Department, College English Department and Department of Public English for Graduates. It offers BA programs in English, Japanese, Korean and French. The school takes on the teaching duties for undergraduates, postgraduates, and double majors in the university. The school’s English major is rated as a brand major of Shandong Province. It is awarded as a first-class undergraduate major in Shandong Province and in China. The school has built a state-level demonstration center for experimental teaching. The school’s “Applied Foreign Language Talents Training Base” has been appointed as a Humanistic Science Research Base of Shandong Province. The school’s many courses have been identified as excellent courses of Shandong Province.
The school has the authority to confer master’s degrees in the first-level discipline of Foreign Languages and Literature, which comprises of 3 second-level academic degrees of English Language and Literature, Japanese Language and Literature, and Korean Language and Literature; 2 professional degrees: MTI (Master of Translation and Interpreting) and Subject Teaching of English. English Language and Literature is one of the key disciplines in Shandong Province during the 12th Five-Year Plan Period.
The school now has an enrollment of 1706 full-time undergraduate students and 138 full-time postgraduate students. Students’ passing rates of this school in TEM 4 and 8 are both higher than those of their peers nationwide by over 30%. The passing rate of Japanese proficiency Test Level 1 is over 90%, and the passing rate of Korean Proficiency Test Level 4 is close to 100%. The employment rate of graduates is over 85% and that of the postgraduates is 100%. They are all highly appraised by their employers.
The school presently has a teaching staff of 165 members, including 9 professors and 44 assistant professors, 35 of whom have Doctoral Degrees. The school has one chief expert of key disciplines in universities in Shandong Province, one chief expert of The Innovation Team of “Science and Technology Innovation Plan for The Youth” in universities in Shandong Province, four members of the college-level young and middle-aged academic backbone leaders, and 13 foreign teachers.
The school has made remarkable teaching achievements with its strong teaching staff reasonably structured, characterized with a dense academic atmosphere and advanced teaching ideas. The school takes foreign linguistics and foreign language teaching, foreign literature, translation studies, and Eastern Asia language and culture as the main areas of teaching and research. The school has formed distinct characteristics and advantages in the research on the comparison between English and Chinese based on generative grammar theory, econometric research of modern Chinese, informationization of foreign language teaching, post-war British academic novels, Chinese cultural classics and academic translation, the application of translation technology in teaching, the Maritime Silk Road, the comparison of traditional customs between China and Japan, etc.
Recently, the school faculty has been hosting 15 research projects supported by the National Social Science Fund, and over 60 projects of Shandong provincial social science programming. More than 80 articles have been published on CSSCI periodicals, in addition to 90 academic books. The aforementioned publications have won 2 second and 6 third prizes of provincial Social Science Excellence Award and 13 prizes of Shandong High School Excellence Award.
The school has excellent teaching conditions, modern facilities such as advanced language labs, audio-visual labs, simultaneous interpretation labs and multi-media classrooms, and a rich collection of books and audio-visual materials.
The school has actively carried out international exchanges and cooperation, and has established joint training and exchange programs for undergraduates and masters with more than 10 universities in the United States, Britain, France, Japan, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand and other countries. The school regularly invites experts and scholars from home and abroad to give lectures, and sends teachers abroad to study, lecture or attend international academic conferences. In the past three years, the school has invited nearly 40 experts and scholars from famous universities in Japan, South Korea and China to give lectures. Nine teachers were sent abroad to study, and more than 60 staff attended academic conferences. One teacher has been appointed as the Chinese Director of the Confucius Institute in Loire, France. By now, the school has hosted 18 doctoral forums. It undertook the “Belt and Road and Sino-Foreign Cultural Exchange Academic Seminar”, “Informationization of Foreign Language Teaching Seminar”, “Chinese Culture Translation and Communication Academic Seminar”, “The Seminar on the Communication of Traditional Chinese Culture in the Korean Peninsula under the Background of the Belt and Road”, and other academic conferences, which have had a wide impact in the academic world.
Now, the school is fully implementing the Party's educational policy, adhering to the socialist orientation in school running, fulfilling the fundamental task of fostering virtue through education, and training socialist builders and successors who are well-developed in morals, intelligence, physical fitness, aesthetics, and work. The school is striving to contribute to the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.
